The Band of HM Royal Marines School of Music was performing in Guildhall Square in Portsmouth this afternoon. I knocked off work slightly early specially to go and watch the Bootnecks band.
In terms of the music and their drill, I wouldnt mind betting they’re the best military band in the world. I remember reading a quote from a Falklands veteran that ‘these men can make you feel ten feet tall’, and after watching them you can well understand that. And thats exactly what military music is about, lifting people to even greater heights. As well as the usual stirring, uplifting military tunes straight out of war films, they do cameos such as the theme from Jurassic Park or the post horn gallop. Theres some amazing clips on youtube of them performing at the festival of remembrance with Katherine Jenkins, truly memorable. And they’re all fully trained medics to boot, many of them have seen active service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Theres nothing more inspiring for me than watching them march off the Square playing Heart of Oak and A Life on the Ocean Waves.
Best military band in the world? I think so. As the pub landlord would say, makes ya proud to be British!
