I’ve just got back from a nice day at Shoreham Airshow. But rather than write a report right now, I would like to pay tribute to Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging RAF.
Flt Lt Egging, 33, was killed when his Hawk crashed on the way back to Bournemouth Airport after the Red Arrows display at the Bournemouth Airshow earlier today. I’m sure I don’t need to say anything too much about how awesome the Red Arrows are – in many people’s minds the best military air display team in the world.
Footage suggests that Flt Lt Egging, a Harrier pilot who had served in Afghanistan, crashed after attempting to steer his plane away from houses. The MOD have not confirmed but it is believed that his Hawk jet suffered a malfunction.

It’s always sad to lose a pilot of an air demo team, being the cream of the crop as they are. I feel a bit more sorry for the Red Arrows – unlike the US teams, I know their planes are no “spring chickens”, and have a certain evil reputation in the press, deserved or no.
Excellent choice, James. May God bless and keep Flight Lieutenant Eggings friends and family. He died doing what he loved – may we all come to our end with such a rich epitaph.
Greatly saddened to hear this. As the son of a Brylcreem Boy I used to watch the Reds training. No question they are the best and the team will be hurting. My thoughts are with Flt. Lt. Egging’s family and friends.
It really is so sad. With all due respect to other display teams, the Red Arrows really have to be seen to be believed. And remember, they are flying 30+ year old, trainer jets, with a lot less resources than comparable US teams. They’re a national icon. I’m sure many in the MOD would love to get rid of them in the name of cost cutting, but there would be a massive outcry.
The Reds were due to fly over at Shoreham yesterday, but obviously the sad events prevented them. Lets hope they are not grounded for too long and can get back into the air soon. And safely.
had a great day on friday watching the red arrows they are and always light up bournemouth with there spectacular show and again on saturday about half past two i had heard the terrible news and would not believe it until i put sky news on it brought the hairs up on my arms and hoped the pilot was ok and then terrible news came by the evening , what a sad moment for his family and the whole of bournemouth its been a bad week with the floods and then this . my thoughts are with FLT .LT .EGGINGS family and all those who knew him … rest in peace jon .
I saw an Arrow in the air.
His airplane crashed we all know where.
But Jon’s in Heaven
And welcome there.
