Proposals for local TV in the UK

Am I the only person who thinks this is possibly the first and only good idea to come out of the coalition Government?

The Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt yesterday announced proposals to develop local TV stations in Britain. He rightly states that most developed countries have city-based broadcasters. Every city in Germany has a TV tower for broadcasting. Meanwhile, in Britain the most we get is half-hour every day of regional news (for regional read Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Dorset, Oxfordshire, and even Milton Keynes!), and a regional edition of Inside Out every week. People in Britain do not think regionally, or even in terms of counties nowadays – we think locally.

Whats more, the emphasis is too often ‘cat is stuck up tree in Southampton‘. Yawn! BBC South is based in Southampton, and too often South Today is full of non-stories from Southampton and to hell with everyone else. And the sports presenters are always closet Scummers.

The only thing that would concern me is who exactly would fund such an enterprise – the last time anyone attempted a Portsmouth TV it was awful – more wood in the presenters than there was in the coffee table in front of them.

Tell you what. We here in the US will GIVE you one news team from each of our major cities. This will benefit the news coverage quality in both countries, and will give you the benefit of learning to appreciate REAL news. Cat up a tree? Dude, that’s a WEEK long investigative campaign, with multiple teams assigned to determine why the city put trees where cats can climb them, a history of abusive owners who let their cats climb trees, the failed policies of the Obama administration’s failure to keep cats out of trees, and Sarah Palin’s concepts of how prayer and limiting Democrats’ influence on government could keep the cats out of trees. Oh, I forgot – an investigation into the military and why they are wasting money on F-22 Raptors and MRAPs when we obviously have a “getting cats out of trees” inferiority compared to China.

    Firstly is the cat OK?

As a man of the Interweb I am surprised you have given this any coverage. Broadcast conventional TV is about to die at a national level. Why? The Interweb. Oddly this is similar to HMG backing high speed rail at £30bn when it should be backing a fibre-back bone roll out for a lot less. Why? We are shifting to a virtual world. The only people will benefit from a high speed line (devoid of freight) will be business people. And I think as the tech’ for virtual meetings advance the requirement to get in the BMW to go off to London will disappear. Local TV can be piggy backed off local radio. Actually the renaissance in local radio (and the rise of podcasts and vid casts) is a case in itself for not wasting scarce public funds.

Don’t forget I want to know if the cat is OK……. ;)

(Talking of vid casts and online web cams I haven’t check the Portsmouth harbour one for a long time. Occasionally when I had writer’s block and was tired of the Isle of Man web cams I would flip over to Pompey and watch the Whitelink ferries. )

  4. Greetings, I do think your web site could possibly be
having web browser compatibility issues. Whenever I look at your blog in Safari, it looks fine however when opening in
I.E., it’s got some overlapping issues. I simply wanted to give you a quick heads up!
    Apart from that, wonderful site!

  5. Hello, i read your blog from time to time and i own a similar one and i was just wondering if
you get a lot of spam feedback? If so how do you stop it, any plugin or anything you can recommend?
I get so much lately it’s driving me crazy so any help is
    very much appreciated.

  6. Of course, there are also some almost-on-the-fence-do-something-or-you-will-get-ended-rapidly stage.

I admit, our church is happy never to have a lot of people that think
    that way.

  7. She handles the problem himself by sticking up for him and later conversing with George.
Enjoy the show and love the fashion tips, but I need to understand how
to look amazing over a Walmart budget.
