The Sinking of the Laconia… FINALLY!

I have been informed by a reliable source – via the BBC – that the Docu-drama ‘The Sinking of the Laconia’ is going to reach our screens on 6 and 7 of January 2011. It will be on BBC at 9pm each night.

The programme was originally due to be on screen in the Spring of 2010. However the BBC asked the producer to edit it from a feature length drama to two shorter episodes. It’s been a long time coming, and there have been several false starts before, but it’s listen on the BBC website so fingers crossed!

For those of you who aren’t aware, my great-uncle Leading Stoker Thomas Daly was onboard the Laconia when she went down, so I’ve got a personal interest in the programme.

No sign of it on BBC America. Since Doctor Who is about the only thing we get within 6 months of it airing in Britain, guess I’ll have to wait until summer….or fall… or 2012…. :(

Hopefully it will reach you guys eventually… its quite a big budget affair so I would imagine that they want to export it for all its worth.

Can you guys watch BBC iplayer over there?

Oof- um…. well, yeah, we can use that, or some variety of viewer. Problem is, we use satellite for the internet (being about a 1/2 mile from the official Middle of Nowhere), and we have download limits. There is a free time between like 2 and 6 am (our Eastern time), but there’s also an overall daily limit, even including the free time. So it depends heavily on how big the beastie is. I know we can get Top Gear and Dr. Who without blowing the limit (call it 80 minutes of video), so if each of the 2 parts are the same size or smaller, we should be able to get it. (We can’t stream video – delay time up and back to the satellite screws up the link.) God, we gotta move somewhere civilised!

Oh – I’ve also been informed by our Chief of Download Tech (the wife) that BBC iplayer blocks U.S. ISPs. There IS a workaround, but it forces you to shut off ALL your PCs firewalls and anti-virus protection. No, thanks! The wife trades stuff with some friends over there, so she’s gonna work her network, see if somebody can get it. And if not, time wounds all heels .. er .. uh .. that is, time conquers all. I can wait, I guess. :(

Thats a shame John, I thought that might be the case. Someone might put it on youtube, but the beeb are hot on pulling things from youtube. At least you can look forward to a full review right here!

Uh – hate to be a nit-picker, but if you review it BEFORE I get to see it, then it’s technically a PREVIEW for me. Sorry, too many years of advanced English Lit classes.
(Oh, yeah, right, an AMERICAN trying to tell a BRITISH person how to write ENGLISH! No wonder you guys abandoned the Colonies!) ;)

Sky Arts have been showing some of the wartime GPO films over Christmas.

And they have also shown that cracking short film on
    HMS Victorious.

    • John Erickson

Sky is related to Fox here in the States, no? That might be a nice option, provided that little wanker Rupert bothers to let us Yanks have anything decent! (We used to get a show called Road Wars, about the Thames Valley police. How far behind its’ showing in the UK? Oh, just that half the force had retired or been promoted out of the field. And they drove Cavaliers, only getting Astras later in the run. So ancient, it should’ve run on History Channel!) :p
